Lipstick Bleed Lines
Lines that etch vertically from the upper or lower lips are commonly called lipstick lines or smoker lines. These lines are more prevalent on the upper lips. At Castleknock Cosmetic Clinic Dublin we know that lip lines are sometimes called smoker’s lines, most individuals develop the lines for reasons other than smoking. The lines are a result of loss of volume that occurs with age, along with repetitive bunching of the tissue from muscular activity. These lines can contribute to lipstick bleeding, hence the name ‘lipstick lines’.
At Castleknock Cosmetic Clinic Dublin we typically treat lipstick lines with advanced dermal fillers, toxin muscle relaxing injections or a combination of both. The depth of the lines and extent of puckering will influence treatment modalities. It is very common to use toxin muscle relaxing injections to treat lipstick lines regardless of the depth of the lines. Toxin injections will have a couple of positive effects on the lines over time. First, the toxin relaxing injection will help relax the lines, which tends to eliminate the more permanent etching that may have occurred. Secondly, it will help extend the longevity of the advanced dermal fillers. Toxin muscle relaxing injection is generally placed at certain points in the orbicularis oris muscle which surrounds the mouth, including the area of the vermilion border of the lips.
Dr Kahlout shares his views about the latest treatment options for lip lines through a series of clinic blogs:
If the lines are a little deeper, then we will place a soft, smooth dermal filler such as Restylane, Juvéderm or Belotero along the lines to help fill them in. Also we may place a dermal filler such as Radiesse or Restylane Perlane underneath and horizontal to the lines to help elongate the area and stimulate collagen growth. This will help with the puckered look, as well as diminishing the furrowed lines.
Adding some fullness to the lips with lip augmentation dermal fillers such as Restylane Kysse or Juvederm Volbella will also have a positive effect on the lipstick lines by further elongating the lip that has contracted over the years. Additionally, this treatment will help with lines on the lips themselves.
How to avoid Lip Lines:
1 Avoid applying foundation or concealer in these lines themselves, as makeup can settle deep inside and cake, drawing even more attention to the lines.
2 Stop smoking. Not only to the carcinogens in cigarettes destroy your skin and weaken its fibres, but the constant sucking and puffing encourages those lines to appear and remain even after you finished your cigarette.
3 Wear a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher and protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Sun exposure remains on the top reasons for premature ageing.
4 Proper skin care containing retinoic acid and vitamin-A derivatives applied regularly; from an early age
How to correct Lip Lines:
1 Consider having a few sessions of facial rejuvenation laser, which promote healthy skin formation and accelerate sloughing away dead skin cells.
2 Consider having toxin muscle relaxing injections to erase the lines around the mouth. Results last anywhere from 4 to 6 months and give the most dramatic results.
3 Soft dermal fillers are ideal for those who want instant long lasting results
4 Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is ideal definitive method of correction
6 Dermaroller application
