Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a common harmless enlargement of the skin oil glands. It occurs in about 2% of the Irish population and usually in adults over 40 years of age. Long term immune suppressant medication used for organ transplants may also cause sebaceous hyperplasia in about 15% of patients. Few patients may start developing sebaceous hyperplasia during puberty. At Castleknock Cosmetic Clinic Dublin, Dr Kahlout sees to all patients with sebaceous hyperplasia after skin analysis.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia may present in a form of a single or multiple lesions. They usually appear on the face, chest, upper arms, mouth lining and around genitals or around nipples. The lesions are small (2–9 mm), painless, whitish-yellow-to-pink or skin-coloured bumps, often with a central depression or dimple.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia is a benign condition and does not have long term complications. Unfortunately, sebaceous hyperplasia will not go away on its own. You might want to consider getting these lesions removed for the following reasons:
If the lesions are irritated (by shaving, by wearing glasses, or clothing)
If they are cosmetically bothersome
If you have many lesions (over 10)
If they are growing or bleeding
At Castleknock Cosmetic Clinic Dublin there are a number of treatment options for these annoying critters:
Distraction by blade free short wave diathermy
Applying topical chemicals
Applying a drug activated by light (photodynamic therapy)
Vaporising Laser treatment
One of the least invasive and most effective treatments is blade free radiosurgery available at the Dublin based cosmetic clinic.
Minor discomfort could be felt while getting injection of local anaesthesia. Once area is anaesthetised Short Wave Diathermy (SWD) is painless. The treatment causes destruction of the sebaceous hyperplasic lesions and recovery is expected over the next few days.
