There’s a lot of women who do everything right but despite that they don’t get that tightness that they want and they’re not a candidate or abdominoplasty, tummy tuck or liposuction. To help them, a company, Apyx Medical that’s been around for many years retooled and repurposed their radiofrequency (RF) technology, which was surgical electrocautery (using electricity to essentially burn tissue), into Renuvion J-Plasma skin tightening device.
Renuvion
Their Renuvion device is used in a similar manner to liposuction. We make tiny little holes, we numb up the area, and then we put the treatment wand inside, between the skin and the muscle. If I need to create space for the Renuvion probe to go in I’ll do what’s called tunnelling.
We treat tiny little fibres called reticular septa that attach skin to the muscle. The J-Plasma physically tighten the connective tissue septa so that the skin is attached little tighter to the muscle. If there is unwanted fat in the area, we would use VASER ultrasound to melt the fat first, remove it with gentle suction. Through the same tiny incisions, we insert the Renuvion probe, passing it inside spraying helium J-Plasma.
How Renuvion Works
Helium Plasma
Renuvion uses helium to generate plasma. Plasma is a fourth sate of matter, like lightning strike. Imagine this is a lightning rod and it goes very carefully layer by layer through all the different areas of the skin where it’s loose, but it’s super microscopic electricity being sprayed between your skin and your muscle.
Shrink-Wrap
Scientific studies were done that showed the temperature goes up and when we hit this magical temperature of 85 degrees Celsius the human tissue just contracts. The Renuvion heats up these fibres that are attaching your skin to the underlying muscle helping to create a little more of a shrink-wrapped effect.
After the procedure you’ll feel a lot of tightness for a while. There will be residual heat effects inside under the skin, feeling of contraction which is expected to go on for several weeks. Aftercare requires restricting physical activities for about 3-4 weeks. I advise my patients to keep the area straight by restricting bending, flexing and with the help of a compression garment and soft paddings.
My approach which includes using both VASER ultrasound and liposuction and this Renuvion in combination I call that J-Plasty.
