You’ve done the hard part. Maybe you’ve lost the weight, had your babies, or even had liposuction. And yet, when you sit down, the skin on your tummy still folds softly over your waistband. Your arms still wave a little longer than you do. It’s frustrating, to be honest. But you’re not ready for the long scar of a tummy tuck or an arm lift either.
That’s the exact spot where Renuvion skin tightening comes in. I’ve been doing body contouring for over 25 years, and I use Renuvion regularly here at Castleknock Cosmetic Clinic in Dublin. Still, no treatment suits everyone. So I want to give you the full picture: what it does well, where it falls short, who it’s right for, and what recovery is really like. Then you can make up your own mind.
What is Renuvion skin tightening, and how does J-Plasma work?
Renuvion (you’ll also hear it called J-Plasma) is a device made in America by Apyx Medical. It uses radiofrequency energy to turn helium gas into plasma, a fourth state of matter. I usually tell patients to picture a tiny, controlled lightning strike under the skin.
Here’s what actually happens. I pass a thin cannula through the same 3mm skin openings I use for liposuction. Under your skin there’s a web of fibrous strands (we call them septa) that tie the skin down to the muscle underneath. The plasma heats those strands and they contract. As they shorten, your skin gets pulled in closer to the muscle. Think of shrink-wrap tightening around a box.
Published research on how helium plasma contracts tissue shows the device heats tissue past 85°C for a tiny fraction of a second, while helium gas keeps the tissue around it cool. So you get enough heat to tighten, without the heat spreading where it shouldn’t. Over the next few months your body lays down fresh collagen, so the tightening keeps building long after you’ve gone home.
Why I almost always pair Renuvion with VASER
Helium Plasma
I seldom use Renuvion on its own. In my experience it works best straight after VASER liposuction. VASER uses ultrasound to loosen the fat, but it also tunnels through and loosens that connective tissue. That gives the Renuvion probe an even path to every fibre, and the skin retracts far better as a result.
Skin Tightening
In practice, Renuvion adds about 45 minutes on top of your VASER liposuction or facelift. It goes in through the same tiny openings, so there’s no extra scar. And it’s all done here in the clinic under local anaesthetic. You’re awake, chatting to us if you like, and comfortable throughout.

The benefits of Renuvion skin tightening
The biggest one is simple. Liposuction takes away fat, but what are we going to do about the overlying skin? Without some help, skin over a newly slimmer area can look a bit deflated, like a balloon a few days after the party. Renuvion helps that skin shrink back down over the new shape.
The second benefit, and for many people the deciding one, is that there’s no new long scar. Renuvion sits in the middle ground between liposuction on its own and surgery to cut skin away. If your skin is loose but hasn’t started to hang, that middle ground is often exactly where you want to be.
Then there’s the downtime. Most of my patients are back to normal daily life, desk work included, within about three days. Not three weeks. Three days.
The results also keep improving. Because your body keeps remodelling collagen, the skin carries on tightening for months. The final result usually shows at 8 to 12 months. Once that retraction has happened, it should last long term, as long as your weight stays steady.
I use it on the stomach, arms, thighs, back and neck. Picture a woman in her late thirties with a soft lower tummy after two pregnancies. Her skin has lost its bounce, but it doesn’t hang over anything. For her, VASER with Renuvion can give a flatter, firmer stomach, and no hip-to-hip scar.
There’s also new evidence that Renuvion improves the quality of the skin itself, not just how tight it sits. A clinical study published this year looked at skin six months after Renuvion during a facelift. Compared with untreated skin nearby, the treated skin had around 30% more elastin fibres, the protein that gives skin its spring. It was a small group of facelift patients, so I see it as encouraging rather than the final word. But it fits with what I see in clinic as the months go by.
The drawbacks of Renuvion: what I tell every patient
Look, every treatment has its limits. I’d much rather you hear them from me now than discover them six weeks after the procedure.
First, the area will feel tight and firm for a long time. This is the thing my patients notice most. For 6 to 8 months the treated skin can feel snug, almost like a wetsuit that’s a size too small, while the tissue heals and remodels. It’s normal and it does ease, but you need patience.
Second, darker skin tones carry a higher risk of pigment change. I go through this carefully with every patient with ethnic skin before we plan anything.
Third, Renuvion is not a tummy tuck. Once skin starts to overhang, there’s only so far it can shrink back. In that case, surgery to remove the skin will give you a better result, and I’ll tell you so.
Fourth, you’re not off the hook completely after day three. You’ll need to stay away from strenuous exercise for three weeks, and you’ll wear a compression garment with soft padding.
Other complications can happen too. A published review of Renuvion beyond the neck, used with or without VASER, reported a 13.3% complication rate. Most were minor: fluid collections (seromas), small haematomas, temporary swelling and some skin that stayed loose, with a single burn. That said, a separate safety review of 47 patients found no serious device-related problems. For me, the lesson from both is the same: choosing the right patient matters more than anything else.
And finally, cost. Renuvion adds to the price of your liposuction, so it’s worth being sure it will actually change your result.
Who is a good candidate for Renuvion?
In my clinic, you’re usually a good candidate if your skin is loose but doesn’t hang, you’re at your target weight, you don’t smoke, and you’re happy for the result to build gradually.
The weight point catches people out. If you lose more than about 5% of your body weight after treatment, it can work against the result. So I’d always rather you reach your goal first and then come and see me.
Smoking is a firm no, I’m afraid. It slows healing, and I don’t perform Renuvion on smokers.
If your tummy skin genuinely overhangs, I’ll be straight with you about the limits and refer you to a colleague for surgery to remove it.
Here’s a rough test at home. Lean forward in front of the mirror. If your skin drops into a fold that hangs over, you’re probably past what tightening alone can do. If it just feels soft or a bit crepey, Renuvion may well help. Only an examination gives you the real answer, though.
Renuvion for loose skin on the stomach
The stomach is the area I treat with Renuvion more than any other. Loose skin here usually follows pregnancy, weight loss or just the years, and there’s often a layer of stubborn fat sitting with it. That’s why abdominal VASER liposuction with Renuvion works so well together.
But this is also where the line between tightening and surgery matters most. Mild looseness responds well. An apron of skin hanging over the bikini line needs a tummy tuck, and no device will change that.
Renuvion has a place after a tummy tuck too. I regularly see women with puckered, skin-heavy dog ears at the ends of their scar, often after surgery abroad. Rather than lengthening the scar, I’ll often use Renuvion to shrink that skin back. Renuvion recovery, results and cost in Dublin
This is roughly how it goes with us:
- On the day, local anaesthetic, with Renuvion adding about 45 minutes to your VASER. You go home the same day.
- Around day 3, back to normal daily activities and desk work.
- At week 3, back to strenuous exercise.
- From month 6 to 8, the tightness and firmness gradually ease off.
- At 8 to 12 months, you see your final result.

Is Renuvion skin tightening worth it?
For the right person, yes. If your skin is loose but not hanging, your weight is stable and you don’t smoke, Renuvion skin tightening with VASER can give you a firmer, smoother shape without a long scar. After the procedure you’ll feel a lot of tightness for a while. There will be residual heat effects inside under the skin, feeling of contraction which is expected to go on for several weeks. Aftercare requires restricting physical activities for about 3-4 weeks. I advise my patients to keep the area straight by restricting bending, flexing and with the help of a compression garment and soft paddings.
For the face, my approach includes using both VASER ultrasound and liposuction and Renuvion in combination I call that J-Plasty.
