If you’ve been scrolling through before-and-after photos lately, you’ve probably noticed a certain kind of result that’s hard to put your finger on. The skin looks different, it looks brighter, firmer, more alive, but the face itself is completely unchanged. No pillow cheeks, no frozen brow, no obvious “work.” Just someone who looks like they’ve been sleeping brilliantly, drinking two litres of water daily, and somehow stopped the clock. That, more often than not, is Profhilo at work.
As a doctor practising aesthetic medicine in Dublin, I get asked about Profhilo more than almost anything else right now. So let me walk you through what it is, who it’s truly suited for, and how it fits into the bigger picture of keeping your skin healthy and resilient for years to come.
Why People Come Looking for Profhilo
People rarely book an aesthetic consultation because they want to look “different.” The reason why come in because something has shifted. They catch a glimpse of themselves in a shop window on Grafton Street and don’t quite recognise the skin they’re in. The texture seems dull. The jaw looks a little softer. Fine lines have crept in around the eyes and mouth. The skin that used to bounce back now takes a moment longer to settle. This is the very human experience of facial ageing and it’s far more annoying than simply “getting wrinkles.”
As we age, our skin loses three things simultaneously: hyaluronic acid (its natural moisture-holding molecule), collagen (the scaffolding that gives skin its firmness), and elastin (the spring that lets skin snap back). From our mid-to-late twenties, collagen production begins to slow at the rate of 1-2% per year. By our forties, the structural changes become harder to ignore. The Irish climate doesn’t help, our cold winds and central heating are genuinely drying to the skin, accelerating the kind of dullness and tightness that no moisturiser quite reaches.
What most people want is not a transformation. They want their skin to look like itself again, restored with radiant and glow.
Not All Injectables Are the Same: Understanding the Landscape
Before I explain what Profhilo does, it’s worth understanding the world it sits in, because there’s a lot of confusion between different injectable skin treatments, and your expectations should be matched to the right tool.
Dermal fillers are the structural architects. Dermal fillers add physical volume to specific areas helping to restore hollow cheek, lift a nasolabial fold or define a jawline. They are excellent for what they do, but they change shape, not skin quality.
Skin hydrators (sometimes called classic skin boosters) work in the superficial layers of the skin, flooding the tissue with hyaluronic acid to restore moisture and a plump, dewy glow. Think of them as a very deep drink of water for your skin. Results are lovely but relatively superficial.
Collagen biostimulators such as Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) or Radiesse work by triggering the body’s own collagen-manufacturing process. They produce gradual, long-lasting results and are ideal for patients with more significant volume and structural change.
Profhilo occupies its own unique category: the bioremodeler. It is not a filler, not simply a hydrator, and not a traditional biostimulator. It sits at the intelligent crossroads of all three, doing something none of the others do quite as elegantly.
What Makes Profhilo Different: The Science, Simply Explained
Imagine your skin as a sponge that has slowly dried out and lost its shape. A skin booster dips the surface of the sponge in water. A filler pushes a piece of foam inside to hold it up. Profhilo soaks through the entire sponge and then promotes the sponge to start rebuilding itself from within.
Here’s how that works. Profhilo is made from one of a high concentration pure hyaluronic acid. It contains 64mg in just 2ml. What makes it extraordinary is its NAHYCO® Hybrid Technology, developed by the Italian manufacturer IBSA. This process thermally bonds two different forms of hyaluronic acid, the high molecular weight (H-HA) and low molecular weight (L-HA) into what are called Hybrid Cooperative Complexes (HCC).
The H-HA sits in the deeper dermal layer, providing a subtle lifting scaffold. The L-HA travels into the more superficial layers, hydrating intensely and ultimately stimulating the production of four types of collagen (I, III, IV, and VII) as well as elastin. It also stimulates fat cells beneath the skin which are part of what gives a youthful face its gentle fullness and softness.
Unlike traditional fillers, Profhilo doesn’t alter facial contours or add bulk. Instead, it spreads evenly through the tissue, hydrating deeply while promoting elastin and collagen production. The result is skin that genuinely behaves better with more bounce, more glow, more resilience.
Who Is the Right Person for Profhilo?
Profhilo is one of the more versatile treatments in aesthetic medicine. It can be a great option for individuals from around 25 years old through to the forties and beyond, particularly those experiencing early signs of skin ageing or wanting to enhance overall skin quality.
In practice, the patients who benefit most are those who:
- Notice their skin looks tired, dull, or dehydrated despite a good skincare routine
- Have begun to experience early laxity showing subtle softening of the jawline or cheek
- Want improvement in skin quality rather than structural change
- Are not yet ready (or suited) for dermal fillers or surgical intervention
- Want a natural result that nobody can put their finger on
Profhilo is not the right tool if significant volume loss is the primary concern, or if deep structural sagging needs addressing. To be honest, for those patients, we’d look at a combination approach involving biostimulators, fillers, or both. This is exactly why a proper consultation matters so much.
Profhilo’s Role in a Complete Rejuvenation Plan
Here is where things get genuinely interesting and where the most rewarding patient results come from. I think of skin health the way I think about overall health. No single treatment, supplement, or lifestyle change works in isolation. The best outcomes come from a layered, thoughtful approach.
Profhilo is an outstanding foundational treatment. When the skin’s hydration, collagen, and elastin are optimised from the inside, everything else works better. Skincare penetrates more effectively. Toxin treatments (like anti-wrinkle injections) last longer. Dermal filler results look more natural because the surrounding skin tissue has quality and resilience.
A holistic facial rejuvenation plan might look like this:
Layer 1 Skin Quality (Profhilo): Two sessions of Profhilo, four weeks apart, to deeply hydrate, bio-remodel, and lay the foundation. This is often where we begin, particularly for patients new to injectables.
Layer 2 Skin Reconditioning (Biostimulators + Boosters): For patients with more mature skin or specific textural concerns — acne scarring, enlarged pores, uneven tone — we may add a targeted skin booster like Redensity 1 BabyGlow or Polynucleotides to address the more superficial layer, or a collagen biostimulator like Sculptra or hyper-dilute Radiesse for deeper structural rebuilding over several months.
Layer 3 Structure and Expression (Dermal Fillers + Toxins): Once the canvas is in the best possible condition, any structural refinements with filler or softening of dynamic lines with anti-wrinkle injections look markedly more natural and last longer.
Layer 4 Maintenance (Demani Skincare): Retinoids containing Demani R+, high SPF, antioxidant Rejuvenate serum and Recover Night Cream containing peptides are not optional extras, they are the daily work that protects your investment between clinic visits.
This is what futureproofing the ageing process actually looks like. Not chasing every line as it appears but building skin health proactively so that change happens slowly, gracefully, and always on your own terms.
The Profhilo Procedure: What to Expect on the Day
I want to be straightforward with you here, because good information leads to good decisions. Profhilo is administered using the BAP (Bio Aesthetic Point) technique. These are five precisely mapped injection points on each side of the face (ten in total). These specific anatomical points are not chosen randomly. They are selected because the product flows and diffuses most effectively from these locations, reaching the surrounding tissue evenly and safely, while avoiding superficial blood vessels. This is the standardised IBSA-approved method, allowing Profhilo to optimally diffuse across the treated area with fewer injection points.
The entire procedure takes around 20–30 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild sting with a spreading pressure, that is to say it will be noticeable, but entirely manageable. We use topical anaesthetic cream and cold rollers where needed to maximise comfort, and the conversation in the room tends to distract from most of what you feel. Immediately after, you may notice small, raised bumps at the injection sites. These lentil size pubs are completely normal and typically resolve within 12–24 hours. There is no requirement to take time off work. Many patients come in on their lunch break and walk back to the office. Mild tenderness or occasional light bruising is possible for a day or two. You are asked to avoid heavy exercise, saunas, and alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment. No face-down massages or facials for 48 hours. That’s genuinely it.
Two sessions are the standard protocol, spaced four weeks apart. Most patients see a visible improvement in skin luminosity and texture within two to four weeks of the first session, with optimal results appearing six to eight weeks after the second. Results typically last six months, at which point a single maintenance session is recommended to sustain the benefit.
A Final Word: Skin Health Is a Long Game
Profhilo is not a miracle. No injectable treatment is. But in my experience, it is one of the most consistently satisfying treatments I offer because it delivers exactly what it promises: your skin, looking genuinely better, without anyone being able to quite identify why.
The patients who get the most from it are those who see it as part of a bigger commitment to their skin health. Combined with good skincare, sun protection, and a thoughtful treatment plan tailored to where they are in their ageing journey, Profhilo becomes less of a procedure and more of an investment in confidence, in resilience, and in the version of yourself who always looks well-rested, well-hydrated, and completely, naturally you.
If you’d like to find out whether Profhilo is the right starting point for your skin, I’d love to meet you for a skin mapping consultation at our Dublin clinic.
